3:00 AM

By Ryu Hatta, April 23, 2022

“On a waste place strewn with bricks [on] the outskirts of a town twilight was falling. A star or two appeared over the smoke, and distant windows lit mysterious lights. The stillness deepened and the loneliness. Then all the outcast things that are silent by day found voices.” — Lord Dunsany

The hour between 12:00 and 5:00 AM. The hour in which the world is asleep, it’s just you and the silent night. Everyone’s Asleep, no one’s here to judge you now. No more family members to hide from. No more busy streets nor loud traffic preventing you from staying still.

During this silence comes the moment when the voices in your head become clearer. The time to let the thoughts that plague you run free. When the noises subside it is you and the dark empty space that is left.

3:00 AM — when all that is left is the comfort of your pillows and warmth of your blanket; you may now cry, let the tears flow and run from your cheeks. It is when we are alone that we are truly free. Free to breakdown and collapse, no one is going to judge you now.

Go ahead and cry, it’s just you and the silent night. When the tears have stopped, and the heavy feeling is gone. My dear, know that tonight you won; in letting go comes victory, a fighting chance for tomorrow.

Our toughest battles are those hidden in plain sight — battles that inflict wounds and leave untraceable scars. Only in silence can we loudly hear our thoughts. Oh, how many times have you blamed yourself tonight?

How many times have you looked at your reflection tonight? How many times have you gotten up from laying in your bed? How many times have you cried tonight? How many times have you hit your pillows? How many times have you covered and uncovered yourself from your blanket?

Oh, what a peaceful night.
