In March of every year, we celebrate International Women’s Month. This year’s theme for the National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) is “We Make Change Work for Women,” and it has been since 2017. This aims to feature the achievements and empowerment of every woman as a symbol of change rooted on the idea of ‘malasakit’ at ‘pagbabago’. It also echoes the call for gender–balanced treatment both in leadership and decision making — to give equal chances of getting a seat at the table where platforms and varying agendas are discussed and decided.

Moreover, this year, the NWMC will highlight the sub-theme: “Agenda ng Kababaihan, Tungo sa Kaunlaran”. The focus will be about women as trailblazers who deserve to be celebrated for their showcase of strength and bravery, to exercise their right to make choices, amplify their voices, and create changes that will benefit many. The strength to power through and take control of the narrative, raise awareness to social issues that are pivotal — such as gender discrimination, pay disparity, among many others — and call for tangible and lasting solutions.

The world is still experiencing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic — the progress towards gender equality have not been easy, and existence of inequality have been prevalent — further shedding light to the social, political, and economic impacts it has caused, to everyone, especially to women. While we celebrate these successes, we also acknowledge that there is still a huge gap to conquer. Nevertheless, it will not stop the movement, and the march for women will continue to move forward and champion a better and more inclusive place for women.
